How do you soften sugar and cream yarn?
It does soften up after you knit it and with washing. I’ve made some summer tops with it, but at a larger gauge so it’s not so heavy. It works fine for that, and for things like baby blankets and sweaters too. One of my dishcloths is done in stockinette (done while trying to learn tension).

Wash in water not exceeding 86 F / 30 C at delicate setting. Tumble dry at low heat, at delicate setting. For best results, dry cleaning for multicolored large projects is recommended.
How many yards are in a cone of cotton yarn?
So, if your kitchen scale weighs the yarn plus cone at 313 grams, subtract 12ish grams (or the weight of your cone – see photo below), which gives you 301 grams. Then multiply the weight of the cone in grams by the yards per gram: 301 gm x 7.39 yards per gram = 2224 yards of 8/2 cotton on your cone.
