Majority of the applicants want to become popular singers like on ‘Indian Idol’ or release their own music albums and want to pursue a career in music. However, there are few who also have a strong classical base and have been learning music since childhood.”

Echoing Kumar’s views, R.P. Singh, convener, admissions, Sri Venkateswara College, said: “We got the highest number of applicants under music and dance as compared to all other categories – debate, drama, photography, painting and prequiz.”Around 108 have applied for ECA admissions, showing their interest in music while 90 had applied for debate, 70 for creative writing, 65 for drama and 36 for painting this year. Out of 108 around 45 applied under the section of Indian vocal, 35 for Western vocal and 38 for instrumental.

Citing the reason for such large number of applicants under the category of music, Singh said: “Those who sing get a lot of opportunities to perform both individually and also with a band of musicians at college and even outside.”

Moreover, students get a lot of incentives like prize money and if the performance is impressive they get good breaks from sponsors at intercollegiate and outstation events,” Singh added.

NEW YORK, August 14: Indian American corporate honcho Indra Nooyi, once described as one of the “most powerful women in America”, has been named the next CEO of US multinational PepsiCo.

The Chennai-born Nooyi, who will take charge on Oct 1, will succeed Steve Reinemund, who said that he is retiring to spend more time with his family, according to a press release.

Nooyi joined the 33 billion dollar global convenient foods and beverages company in 1994 and has served as president and chief financial officer since 2001, when she was also named to PepsiCo’s board of directors.

She is the fifth CEO in PepsiCo’s 41-year-old history. An alumna of the Indian Institute of Management IIM-Calcutta (IIM-C), she brings with her vast and unique skills to the job.

She has directed the company’s global strategy for over a decade and was the primary architect of PepsiCo’s restructuring, including the divestiture of its restaurants into the successful Yum brand.

She was instrumental in the spin-off and public offering of company-owned bottling operations into anchor bottler Pepsi Bottling Group (PBG), acquiring Tropicana, and the merger with Quaker Oats that brought the Quaker and the sports drink Gatorade businesses to PepsiCo.

Technology will be incredibly advanced and for all you know a million man march is just what they’re looking for. Write what you want. They’ll figure out a way to make it someday.
