Some information may no longer be current. Thousands of Canadian businesses closed their doors for good in 2020, during the first wave of the pandemic, but few commercial casualties attracted more attention than MEC, the popular Vancouver-based retailer that sold outdoor-recreation gear.

MEC had lost roughly $80-million between 2017 to 2020 (excluding gains from real estate transactions), and the pandemic only made things worse. In the first seven months of its most recent fiscal year (which began in late February, 2020), MEC lost another $20.9-million.

MEC, which was founded in Vancouver in 1971, has expanded to 22 stores in 20 cities across Canada and has about 2,700 employees. The retailer is considered to be Canada’s largest supplier of clothing and recreational gear and is also known for its dedication to protecting the environment.

These factories need our business plans far in advance, and depend on us to keep their businesses open. Long lead times means we have less time to monitor sales and be flexible in our product development.
