Is 80mm stem too long for MTB?

On most modern mountain bikes you should be aiming for a stem length somewhere between 50mm and 80mm. Long stems are more stable when climbing using narrow handlebars. That’s it.

Is 80mm stem good?

‘It’s a bit of a cliché that a too-short stem will over-quicken the handling. It’s only true to a point,’ says Phil Cavell, director of Cyclefit in London. ‘Needing a 70mm-80mm stem probably means bike sizing needs to be reviewed, but many riders are happy to ride a 70 or 80 or 90mm stem without difficulty.

What is the standard size of MTB stem?

The standard size for most modern mountain and road bikes, with typical lengths of between 35mm and 80mm for MTB stems, 80mm and 100mm for gravel bikes and 90mm to 140mm for road bikes.

What is the longest MTB stem?

This 190mm stem is the longest we’ve ever seen

  • Only Astana’s Andrey Kashechkin’s 165mm Rotor stem, which we featured way back in 2013 (at the Tour Down Under, oddly enough), comes close.
  • To start my name is Leigh Phillips and I’m currently riding for the Australian UCI Continental squad, Nero Continental.

Is a shorter MTB stem better?

Shorter stems correctly orientate a rider’s forward-leaning weight directly over the front axle, which has a range of benefits by mass-pressuring the wheel when descending. The result is truer steering response and better tyre grip in dusty or muddy terrain.

How do I know if my stem is too short?

If the stem length is correct, the handlebars should completely hide the front hub. If you can see the hub in front of the handlebar, the stem is too short.

Is 110mm stem too long?

No. 110 is no more an indication that a frame is to small than 90 is an indication a frame is too big.

How do I know if my stems are too long?

What you’re aiming for is a position that ensures you have a slight bend in the elbows to allow your arms to bend easily as the front wheel tracks the road surface. You don’t want your arms locked out straight, that’s a sign of a stem that is too long.

How do I know my bike stem size?

Know the length by measuring from the middle bolt of the bike’s headset top to the center of the handlebar. Ensure that you measured the length in centimeters or millimeters. A bike stem length usually runs in 10 mm increments and starts from 70 mm to 140 mm.

How do I know what size stem to get?

Put simply, if you want a racy, aggressive and aerodynamic position, a longer stem will provide a more stretched out riding position. If comfort is your top priority, a shorter stem length will bring the bars closer to the saddle and put you in a more upright position, placing less strain on your back.

Should I shorten my MTB stem?

Using a shorter stem gives the bike quicker handling characteristics and a more responsive feel. A longer stem shifts your body weight towards the front of the bike and puts you in a better pedaling position, especially on those steep climbs.

Can a stem be too short?

If the stem is too long the bars will be too far forward and the hub will be aligned behind the bars. If the stem is too short the hub will be aligned in front of the bars. If the stem length is good, the bars will be in direct alignment (or close) between your eyes and hub.
