Is Mount Warning an active volcano?
Mount Warning is the central volcanic remnant of an ancient shield volcano, the Tweed Volcano, which would have been about 1,900 m (6,200 ft) above sea level or just under twice the height of the current mountain. This volcano last erupted around 23 million years ago.
Can you camp at the top of Mount Warning?

Why is it called Mount Warning?
It was named Mount Warning by Captain Cook to warn future mariners of the offshore reefs he encountered in May 1770. Reserved for public recreation in 1928, Mount Warning was dedicated as a national park in 1966.
How long does Mt Warning take to climb?

The 8.8km return walk takes at least 5hrs and is long and steep, with a very strenuous 100m vertical rock scramble to reach the summit. The high, exposed summit can attract wild weather and the track shouldn’t be attempted in poor conditions, especially during thunderstorms.
When did Mt Warning close?
The mountain was initially closed in March 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions before the chains to the summit were removed in January 2021. The upper reach of Wollumbin was declared an Aboriginal Place in 2014 in recognition of its special significance to Aboriginal people.
