Is vinyl ester the same as vinyl?
Vinyl ester resin, or often just vinyl ester, is a resin produced by the esterification of an epoxy resin with acrylic or methacrylic acids. The “vinyl” groups refer to these ester substituents, which are prone to polymerize and thus an inhibitor is usually added.
How long does vinyl ester last?
three months
Vinyl Ester Resin is formulated for curing at room temperature with methyl ethyl ketone peroxide. Suitable for either hand-lay- up or spray-up. Shelf Life is three months.
Who makes Derakane resin?
Ashland
Derakane and Derakane Momentum™ epoxy vinyl ester resins are designed and manufactured by Ashland.
How strong is vinyl ester resin?
VE vinyl ester resin
| PARAMETER | UNIT | VALUE |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength | MPa | 16-95 |
| Tensile modulus | MPa | 3,000-3,800 |
| Tensile stress at yield | MPa | 77-88 |
| Elongation | % | 2.5-9 |
Is FRP acid resistant?
In dilute form sulfuric acid is extremely corrosive to carbon steel, yet FRP is highly resistive. Some FRP tanks based on DION® 382 have contained sulfuric acid for over 40 years without problems. However, in concentrated form (>76%), sulfuric acid displays reducing properties which makes it more aggressive toward FRP.
What is the difference between epoxy resin and vinyl ester resin?
Vinyl ester falls between polyester and epoxy on price, most physical properties, and handling qualities. Vinyl ester resins actually exceed both polyester and epoxy in corrosion resistance, temperature resistance, and elongation (toughness).
Whats the difference between vinyl and resin?
Vinyl is less prone to breakage than resin. Raw resin is more expensive, per volume, than raw vinyl. Silicone molds for casting resin are less expensive than the the metal molds use for casting vinyl. This means that for very small runs of figures, resin is a great option.
Can you gelcoat over vinyl ester?
Yes poly gel coat is OK over vinyl ester but you will need PVA (or a wax additive) over the gel coat. That is because both vinyl and poly are air inhibited – which means that they do not harden until air deprived.

What is a vinyl ester laminator?
A vinyl ester laminating resin that is corrosion resistant to a wide range of acid, alkalis, bleaches, solvents, and organic compounds. The light color of the resin makes defects easier to see and correct while the resin is still workable.
