What is A continuous load NEC?

Because the term “continuous load” is in more than one article in the NEC, the definition is in Article 100. It is a load where the maximum current is expected to continue for three hours or more. Continuous load provisions pertain to branch circuits, feeders and services.

What is minimum ampacity?

MCA stands for Minimum Current Ampacity or Minimum Circuit Ampacity is defined as the minimum current ratings for the supply wire or conductor in an electrical circuit. In other words, MCA is the minimum current ratings that the wires or conductors should safely carry under normal operating conditions.

What is the small conductor rule?

Small Conductors. Unless specifically permitted in 240.4(E) or (G), the overcurrent protection shall not exceed that required by (D)(1) through (D)(7) after any correction factors for ambient temperature and number of conductors have been applied.

Is water heater considered continuous load?

A fixed-storage-type water heater that has a capacity of 120 gallons or less shall be considered a continuous load for the purposes of sizing branch circuits. Because of 422.13, this water heater shall be considered a continuous load.

How many hours is continuous load?

three hours
Any type of load that runs for more than three hours is considered a continuous load.

What is Max fuse amps?

Notice that the MCA is 28.6 amps and the maximum fuse or circuit breaker is 50 amps. This means it is allowable to install this unit on a circuit breaker rated at 50 amps and a conductor rated at 28.6 amps, according to the NEC’s NFPA 70.

What does AWG mean electrical?

American Wire Gauge
American Wire Gauge (AWG) is the standard way to denote wire size in North America. In AWG, the larger the number, the smaller the wire diameter and thickness.

What is the NEC code for minimum ampacity and size?

210.19 (A) (1) Conductors Minimum Ampacity and Size. 210.19 (A) (1) Conductors Minimum Ampacity and Size. Code Change Summary: New code language was added to clarify how to properly size branch circuit conductors. The code language added to this section in the 2014 NEC is not a new concept. It is just a clarification.

How do I find the NEC code for branch circuit?

See the actual NEC text at NFPA.ORG for the complete code section. Once there, click on the “free access” tab and select the applicable year of NFPA 70 (National Electrical code). 210.19 (A) (1) General. Branch-circuit conductors shall have an ampacity not less than the maximum load to be served.

What’s new in the 2014 NEC code language?

The code language added to this section in the 2014 NEC is not a new concept. It is just a clarification. Branch circuit conductors are still calculated the same way as before but the revised code language is a bit more user friendly.

Where can I find the NEC text for NFPA 70?

Below is a preview of the NEC.
