A collective agreement is a written contract between the employer and a union that outlines many of the terms and conditions of employment for employees in a bargaining unit. The terms and conditions are reached through collective bargaining between the employer and the union.

Are collective agreements contractual?
It is not legally binding as between the parties unless in writing and stated to be so, although it may have binding consequences as between a worker and an employer if it is incorporated into the worker’s contract. Many of the statutory consequences depend upon the collective agreement being in writing.

On April 23, 1937, an agreement with General Motors was ratified by the membership and Local 222 became the bargaining agent for the union members. On November 26, 2018, GM made the announcement that they would close the Oshawa facility.
Who are Unifor Local 222 members?
The truck drivers at Canada Cartage in Oshawa joined Unifor Local 222 in March 2017. This unit was transferred to Local 222 from Local 1688 (Ottawa) in 2006. All taxi drivers for City-Wide in Oshawa are members of Local 222. This unit was certified on December 16, 2003 and joined Local 222. They ratified their first contract in December 2004.
