What is the function of pars opercularis?

The pars opercularis (BA44) is involved in language production and phonological processing due to its connections with motor areas of the mouth and tongue. The pars triangularis (BA45) is involved in semantic processing.

Where is Triangularis located?

The pars triangularis refers to the triangular shaped cortical region of the inferior frontal gyrus in the frontal lobe of the brain. It sits in between the more rostral pars orbitalis and caudal pars opercularis which altogether make up the inferior frontal gyrus.

What does the pars triangularis do?

More specifically, the pars triangularis is involved with semantic processing of language. In the non-dominant hemisphere, the same cortical region is involved in non-verbal communication such as gesticulation, facial expression and modulation of timing and intonation of speech 1,5,7.

Where is the inferior frontal gyrus?

the frontal lobe
The inferior frontal gyrus makes up the lateral and inferior surface of the frontal lobe and is separated from the middle frontal gyrus above by the inferior frontal sulcus. It contains the frontal operculum (hiding the anterosuperior part of the insular cortex).

Where is Broca’s area?

the frontal cortex
New research shows that Broca’s area, located in the frontal cortex and shown here in color, plans the process of speech by interacting with the temporal cortex, where sensory information is processed, and the motor cortex, which controls movements of the mouth.

What is Opercularis?

operculāris (neuter operculāre); third-declension two-termination adjective. covered (with a lid)

Where is the frontal operculum?

The term frontal operculum refers to the part of the frontal lobe that overlies the rostrodorsal portion of the insula in primates. It is defined by dissection. It is separated from the insula by the anterior two-thirds of the superior limiting sulcus.

What is brocas?

Broca’s area is also known as the motor speech area. It is near the motor cortex and utilized in speech production, located in the inferior frontal gyrus. This area regulates breathing patterns while speaking and vocalizations required for normal speech.

What does the frontal lobe do?

The frontal lobes are important for voluntary movement, expressive language and for managing higher level executive functions. Executive functions refer to a collection of cognitive skills including the capacity to plan, organise, initiate, self-monitor and control one’s responses in order to achieve a goal.

What is the gyrus rectus?

The gyrus rectus, or straight gyrus, is located at the most medial margin of the inferior surface of the frontal lobe 1,2. Its function is unclear but it may be involved in higher cognitive function (e.g. personality) 3.

What are Broca’s area and Wernicke’s area?

Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas are cortical areas specialized for production and comprehension, respectively, of human language. Broca’s area is found in the left inferior frontal gyrus and Wernicke’s area is located in the left posterior superior temporal gyrus.

What does Wernicke’s area do?

Wernicke area, region of the brain that contains motor neurons involved in the comprehension of speech. This area was first described in 1874 by German neurologist Carl Wernicke. The Wernicke area is located in the posterior third of the upper temporal convolution of the left hemisphere of the brain.
