What is the point of pad stitching?
Pad stitching is used to hold the hair canvas to the fabric. It’s sort of like quilting, from the reverse side, and then the stitches are covered up. When the stitches are covering a piece of fabric, the fabric has more stiffness and body to it.
What is felling stitch?
Also called an “appliqué stitch,” a fell (or “felling”) stitch is used to appliqué one layer of fabric (generally a folded or selvage edge) to another. It’s quick, strong, and flexible-the piece sewn on with a fell stitch can move somewhat like a hinge, and that makes it good for installing linings.
What is under collar?
The undercollar used in menswear tailoring is cut from a fabric that will allow a sharp crease in the collar. The edges are usually left raw and the undercollar is fastened to the upper collar by a special hand or machine stitch called a fell stitch, another name for hem stitch.
What is Handfall?
In hand felling, an axe, saw, or chainsaw is used to fell a tree, followed up by limbing and bucking in traditional applications. In the modern commercial logging industry, felling is typically followed by limbing and skidding.
How do you finish an edge by sewing by hand?
Basic Running Stitch Hem
- Fold over the edge of the fabric toward the inside of the garment so that the raw edge is hidden. Depending upon the fabric and desired final appearance, this roll can be as little as 1/4” wide or and inch or more.
- Stitch close to the edge of the folded over hem, keeping your stitch widths even.
