The Dragon-sickness was first1 seen in Thorin Oakenshield, when he refused to provide for the slayer of the Dragon or his people. The Dragon-sickness affected some more than others, and its effects were especially powerful on those who were already greedy and selfish.

After the Battle of Five Armies, Bard gave a significant amount of gold to the Master, who in turn rewarded his followers and friends. However, he met a sad end. He caught the ‘dragon-sickness’, and he fled with his gold into the Waste. Here he was abandoned by his companions before dying of starvation.

Are bombur and bofur brothers?
Bombur’s parentage is unknown. He was the brother of Bofur and cousin of Bifur. Bombur was not of Durin’s line, although he was descended from the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm.
What is corrupted Thorin?
The book answer is that dragon-sickness did it, in the mountain, with a pile of gold. But in the book, dragon-sickness got the Master too, who never set foot in the mountain—but it didn’t get the rest of the Erebor Dwarves or Bilbo (or did it?).

In the book, Thorin dies by what is assumed to be some stray arrows and he’s found dead on the battlefield. In the movie, Thorins death is executed beautifully. Filled with emotion and sadness, and it gives Thorin that one final moment of redemption for going mad and becoming an ass.

Still enraged, Smaug flew south to Laketown and set about destroying it. The townsmen’s arrows and spears proved useless against the dragon’s armoured body. The thrush told Bard the Bowman of Smaug’s one weak spot, a bare patch on the dragon’s belly. With his last arrow, Bard killed Smaug by shooting into this place.
Why did Thorin elect Bilbo in the secret door?
Thorin prevails upon Bilbo to enter the Mountain. Bilbo slips on his ring and descends through the tunnel. He feels the heat of Smaug the dragon and hears its snoring and, in a moment of great bravery, he determines to go on despite his fear.
Why does Bifur have an AXE in his head?
At the Battle of the Five Armies he headbutts an Orc, which results in the axe in his head being ripped out.
